What is Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) is the means by which you are able to consolidate the applications, data and processing that is traditionally resident on each employee’s desktop PC onto a centralised server.

The way this works is quite simple. A central server provides all of your processing power, memory and storage and also acts as a single central location for all of your applications and data. Each of your users are then allocated a virtual instance on this server – their own virtual desktop. By logging onto their virtual desktop they are presented with their own personalised environment and workspace as if this was operating on their own desktop based PC.

This removes the continual pressure to upgrade desktop PCs and laptops as these now only act as access devices to centralised computing power. What is more, new users can be allocated low cost thin-client devices. From a management perspective, this centralised approach dramatically reduces the support, management and provisioning costs associated with having individual PCs, as well as improving security, backups and user management.
