Reducing Your IT Carbon Foot Print

We are all aware of the issues we face with our environment; man’s continued advancement is causing damage to the planet on which we live and we all have to do something to reduce this damage, however small it is.

At b2Lateral, we are conscious of the need to operate in a more environmentally friendly manner and work with our clients to develop greener data centres. We thought we would share with you just a few simple tips that everyone can implement to help reduce our collective IT carbon footprint.

  1. Age profiling. Place older, less-needed data onto cheaper, offline, less power-hungry systems such as tape; postponing the need to add hardware and consume the extra energy required to power and cool it.
  2. Virtualisation. Move your storage from the current non-shared siloed systems to more efficient shared virtual storage.
  3. De-duplication. Files transferred via internal email may end up being stored dozens of times. The latest storage technologies can de-dupe files on primary storage and on backup.
  4. Data compression. By using data compression techniques and only backing up changes to files, you can further decrease the amount of backup storage capacity your company needs.
