Profile:
Sony is a global manufacturer of audio, video, communications and information technology products for consumer and professional markets.
With its music, pictures, game and online businesses, the company is uniquely positioned to be one of the world’s leading digital entertainment
brands, offering an outstanding portfolio of exciting multimedia content.
Business Challenge:
Sony needed to provide their Sales & Marketing people with access to the Blu Ray hardware capabilities of the latest Sony laptops and this was
only supported under Microsoft Vista. Unfortunately, the Sony Corporate desktop OS build was based on Windows XP and there could not support the
Blu Ray capabilities that the business needed. The business was asking for 2 laptops per person, 1 running Vista for the end user presentations
and 1 running XP for the internal systems.
Solution:
b2Lateral proposed a unique lateral approach to this problem and suggested VMware ACE. This would allow the S&M department to have only 1 laptop.
This laptop would be running Windows Vista and would run a Sony Corporate XP build OS inside the VMware ACE system.
Benefits:
This solution reduced the number of laptops required by half, provided reductions in support, licensing and maintenance costs. Additionally, the
configuration allowed additional security tweaks that could not be provided in the standard Sony Windows XP build. b2Lateral provided the Proof
of Concept and the solution was running within 5 days. This solution also addressed the data leakage issues that a lot of people are currently
facing by securing the data and access within the ACE system.
