It All Started With Parking Fines….

Bill managed an IT Support team for a large legal practice with offices in most of the large cities in the UK. He was struggling to control his wayward team, whilst having unrealistic expectations from the partners who knew just enough about IT to be dangerous.

The IT support team drove around the country trying to troubleshoot problems with desktops from patch management to “blue screen” issues. While doing this, they accumulated many parking fines as they didn’t care where they parked as long it was near the office. In addition to the parking fines, the support team was wasting valuable time as well as money on petrol travelling to each site. Bill was losing most of his department budget on these costs when the budget could be better spent on some new kit, and those desperately needed software upgrades.

Bill knew that something had to change and that he needed to find a solution. He spent his lunch hour searching on the internet and came across software which claimed that it could geographically manage dispersed desktops, eliminate compliance gaps by automating software setup and updates by providing healing and migration for desktops. He couldn’t believe it; nothing could be that good.

Bill decided on a pilot scheme and if it really worked, then he could sell it to the Partners based on the cost savings alone. Of course, he would have problems with the IT crowd as they would miss driving around the country fitting in the odd leisurely lunch or shopping trip, but he would win them over with tempting offers of working with new kit and the software and technical training he could now invest in.

The pilot was a “Eureka” event for Bill. The savings on the travelling to problem solve and implement patches was just the tip of the iceberg. The asset inventory became a streamlined operation and meant not spending money on software that wasn’t necessary or on extra licences just to be on the safe side, no unlicensed copies, and having the exact number of desktops. The cherry on the cake was endpoint protection as now the team would no longer repeatedly lose USB keys and CD’s on trains and in taxis. This was a sure-fire winner.

Bill presented the amazing changes that Zenworks would bring to the practice and the partners were more than impressed. They now wow their chums on the golf course with the technology of their state of the art IT system and the wonders of remote management.

Bill has lost his nervous tic, no longer bites his nails and looks forward to coming to work.
